Senate seats to be offered to previous candidates

Clarity around the rules of vacancies with respect to the Senate race was given today with a letter from the Senate’s secretariat. It appears the UBC Senates more closely resemble the Canadian Senate than we thought.

In the case of an absence of candidates, the seats are first offered to the senators of the year prior in order of most-votes received. If after that, they are then not filled, the AMS appoints senators by resolution.

In other words:

  • Alex Lougheed
  • Rob McLean
  • Blake Federick
  • Alfie Lee
  • Azim Wazeer

Are all to be offered Senate seats. If less than three accept, then it’s up to AMS Council to decide the remainder. None of the above senators have responded to our inquiries yet.
