The most important results of the election were just released over at UBC Insiders, and they are:

Keg > Water – 1001

It is now clear that students at UBC prefer beer to water. Why? The Keg made it clear… it’s the 6% alcohol and other things.

Fire > Kingshead – 1105

The students have spoken. We must set fire to the Kings Head pub.

All the winners announced were the straight up Condorcet winners of the election, meaning all that stuff about ‘circular ambiguities’ we spent 80% of the time discussion is irrelevant, and those of you who ‘strategically voted’ likely shot yourself in the foot.

Tim Chu is elected with the strongest mandate of the executive team this year, followed very closely by Johannes Rebane. Voters were not as united behind Tom Dvorak and Crystal Hon, but they still fill their seats with security. As was expected, Duncan and Bijan were clearly ahead of their pack in the Board of Governors race as well, with Mike squeaking ahead.

Close Calls

Blake Frederick comes in with the weakest mandate, by two orders of magnitude compared to Tim. Alex Monegro dropped behind by only 42 votes, giving Monegro the right to file for a recount. If he does so, this race may turn just yet.

To Come

The RBT will be trying our hardest to get as many statistics as we can from the elections this year, including ballot counts, so we can compare ranked pairs to instant run-off voting and first past the post, as well as electorate demographic data (age, year, faculty, gender, domestic v. international, etc.), e-ballot timestamps, and ballots cast by electoral booth. Stay tuned.
