step up to the plate

We at the Radical Beer Tribune have been inspired to step up to the plate and participate in this year’s Blogathon. Registration opens tomorrow, so some of the technical details have yet to be worked out, but suffice it to say that on July 25th, Alex and I will be up at 6:00 AM and be blogging non-stop for 24 hours straight about student politics, academia, student life, liquor policy and the most delicious types of beer.

The blogathon lasts for 24 hours, with at least one post being made every half hour. Posts will not be prewritten. I don’t know what the donation system is, but we do know what charity the donations for this blog will be going towards:

The Canadian Mental Health Association

I think this is an appropriate charity for a blog focusing on student issues. Mental health is something that effects one in five Canadians, and is one of the most overlooked causes. Mental health is something that is personally relevant to all of us. It was actually my dad, a psychiatrist, who suggested the charity, and after doing some research, the situation is pretty staggering.

  • Mental illnesses indirectly affect all Canadians through illness in a family member, friend or colleague.
  • Twenty percent of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness during their lifetime.
  • Mental illnesses affect people of all ages, educational and income levels, and cultures.
  • The onset of most mental illnesses occurs during adolescence and young adulthood.
  • The stigma attached to mental illnesses presents a serious barrier not only to diagnosis and treatment but also to acceptance in the community.
  • Mental illnesses can be treated effectively.

Our goal is to raise $2000.00 in flat donations and pledges by the time the event rolls around. We’re currently 1% of the way there. Help us make a difference in a lot of people’s lives. Depression, anxiety and eating disorders are common among post secondary students. Let’s make it so that people can get support.

Further to that, of all the health problems I’ve personally observed within my friends, mental health is by far the furthest reaching. As someone who has supported a many friends through depression, grief and anxieties, and as someone who suffers from severe anxieties from time-to-time, I can think of no better cause for us to be raising money for!

Good luck! That’s quite ambitious but knowing you two, you’ll reach it in no time flat…
