To all the first years

A wise man I never met once told me a great piece of advice which I took to heart prior to coming to UBC.
This is your chance to reinvent yourself, and to become who you want to be. Your experience will be that which you build for yourself.
A friend and I had some beers recently, and we came up with a couple of (serious) things you need to do during your time on campus, while you still have a huge safety and support net to fall on to. I’ve added some since the conversation.
Fail an exam.
Experience extreme anxiety over possibility of failing a course.
Fall in a love.
Have your heart broken. (This one is key)
Lose a friend.
Make a new best friend.
Make a sexual mistake.
Be publicly humbled.
Seriously consider dropping out.
What other (serious) things should all first-years go through, prior to being done at UBC?

    I have done all of these! I guess that’s why I feel that I’m now ready to graduate.

    Of course, wise thoughts always manifest with a buddy over beer.

    I’m enjoying my last few days as a First-Year hehe.

    * Fail an exam.
    Nope.
    * Experience extreme anxiety over possibility of failing a course/exam/assignment.
    YES. Terrified of compsci now.
    * Understand and get over said anxiety.
    YES. Said terrified experience scared me into studying.
    * Fall in a love.
    Mm.
    * Have your heart broken. (This one is key)
    Still innocent.
    * Lose a friend.
    Yep.
    * Make a new best friend.
    Mmhmm.
    * Make a sexual mistake.
    Ha.
    * Be publicly humbled.
    Been there done that.
    * Seriously consider dropping out.
    Does “dropping out” to another school count? =P

    Excellent list I must say.
