Why the CMHA?

There were a number of reasons that the CMHA seemed to be appropriate for me to blog for. While I haven’t been particularly (read: at all) active in the world of mental health, this was definitely something that I felt was worthwhile doing.

My dad actually first suggested a mental health related charity. My parents had just completed the Ride to Conquer Cancer, something that has to be one of the largest charity events in the country. While out an evening or two later, my dad bemoaned the fact that there was no Ride to Conquer Mental Health Illness.

Beyond my familial connection to the Mental Health community, I felt that this has had a personal relevance to my own experience at UBC. This past year, I’ve had a number of things to deal with (things that I’m not going to go into here), but the sum total weighted down on me, until I eventually decided to go to UBC Counciling Services. This place is staffed by professional practitioners and students, and is one of the most student oriented and welcoming places.

As someone who has dealt with depression and eating disorders in the past (and present, mind you), I think that it’s important to be aware of your mental health. Beyond the stigma of mental illness, I can personally say that mental illness can be difficult to recognize, even in yourself. The CMHA seemed appropriate.

Anyway, if anyone is concerned about their own mental health, or wanted someone knowledgeable, accessible and confidential to talk to, the UBC Counselling Services phone number is (604) 822-3811.

One in five Canadians will be diagnosed with a mental illness in their lifetime. One in three university students. Mental illness robs you of your ability to feel normal – almost as if you were trapped in an alternate reality, where things are not quite right. Nobody should have to live their life like that. This is a cause worth doing something about.
